The Lay Carmelite Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (Third Order), is a lay association whose members, replying to the special call of God, freely and deliberately promise to live the evangelical life in the spirit of the Carmelite Order and under its direction. The Lay Carmelites were formed in response to the needs of the laity. There has been a branch of the Third Order Carmelites at the House of Prayer since 1987. The group is called "Our Lady of the Mission Carmelites". The group meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month from 8:30am to 3:30PM. The aim of the Carmelite Order is to make Mary, Our Mother, better known and loved and to honor her by imitation of her virtues and way of life. Like Mary, we are called to live in the presence of God with complete dedication to Jesus.
The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a sign, approved by the Church for over seven centuries, which stands for the decision to follow Jesus as Mary did. The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a sacramental or reminder of Our Lady's patronage, protection and intercession. Enrollment in the Brown Scapular admits any practicing Catholic into the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Scapular thus expresses our intention of sharing in the spirit of the Carmelite Order. That intention renews our baptismal resolve to put on Christ with the help of Mary, whose greatest desire is that we become more like Christ in praise of the Trinity, until, dressed for the wedding feast, we reach our home in heaven.
Prayer requests are accepted either on-line, on the telephone or in person at the House of Prayer.
